Puppy Socialization

STOP: this website including this blog is copyright protected. DO NOT copy, paste, reuse, print, publish, any portion of this site without written consent.

There is a lot of talk about puppy socialization, but the truth is many breeders, owners, and even some veterinarian staff really do not know what it is. They just have an outdated idea.

I am passionate about Early Puppy Socialization and Training. I am a certified Puppy Start Right Preschool Instructor. I am proficient in the Puppy Culture program as well as many of it’s companion videos and books.  I am pursuing my dog training certification this Fall. You may be surprised to know that puppy socialization is so much more than puppies meeting the neighbor kids and other family pets.  While socialization is important throughout the first year of life, there is a crucial socialization period between 3-12 weeks (up to 16 weeks in some studies). What your puppy learns during this important developmental stage will likely shape his behavior for the rest of his life. We socialize your puppies to novel stimuli including but not limited to people, pets, surfaces, sounds, everyday house hold items, grooming/husbandry, and more. I also introduce clicker training and follow Puppy Culture Protocols. Proper early puppy socialization creates the foundation for enrichment seeking, confident, well adjusted, friendly companions. I support and practice science based, positive reinforcement.

Supernova Siberians uses online streaming and meeting software to allow new puppy families to follow their puppies socialization, enrichment and training from birth to 8 weeks. We have New Puppy Family Only meetings to discuss your puppies progress and discuss and problem solve common puppy behaviors before they go home! Puppy Culture is an investment and a very popular puppy program, sadly many breeders lie about using it. They emulate what they see other breeders doing resulting in protocols being done incorrectly if even at all. Puppy Socialization done incorrectly can actually cause fearful puppies and even create the problems we are trying to prevent! Beware of breeders using buzz words to make the sell but really they have no idea of what they are doing! We offer live steaming of Puppy Culture protocols and video recording of enrichment and socialization sessions. We don’t just throw toys in a pen to give the illusion that we know what we are doing, we give explanations of what the equipment and or activity provides and why we introduce it. Puppy Play has a purpose!

Our Private Puppy Parent Portal (password protected) on this website provides info and links for our new puppy parents.

Winter, Pregnancy Week 9

July 2 – July 9

Week 9

  • Nipples and vulva should be gently cleaned with warm water, and you might want to trim the hairs surrounding the nipples.
  • She may express milk from her nipples.
  • Watch for her temperature to drop.
  • She may also become restless, uncomfortable, and seek seclusion and in the last few days.
  • She will be ‘nesting’ 12-24 hours before the birth

July 10

  • Expected date of whelp. Average is 62/63 days but may take place from the 58th to the 68th day.
  • If you’re actually taking the temp, it does drop from 101 to 98 degrees.
  • Appetite will disappear as whelping approaches.
  • May see a clear discharge from the vulva.
  • At onset of labor may pace, dig, shiver, pant and/or vomit.

I can feel movement. Winter seems very uncomfortable and is rather irritable. more so than past litters. It is normal for my girls to go 3-5 days past due date. The tend to ovulate a bit later in their cycle. With the way Winter is acting anything is possible. I will start daily temp checks starting tomorrow. We are officially on puppy watch and will do all we can to keep her comfortable. Please keep track of our Facebook page for updates, photos and video.

The 3 pre birth deposits are reserved. Once the puppies are born picks 1-3 will choose and I will take deposits on the remaining puppies. (She has had 6 and 7 pups previously) If you are interested in a puppy from this litter please make sure I have a puppy questionnaire (application) on file!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. [email protected].

Winter, Pregnancy Week 8

Week 8: June 25 – July 1

  • Dam begins to spend a lot more time grooming herself.
  • Her breasts become swollen as her milk forms.
  • Nesting begins as she looks for a place to have her puppies.
  • The dam may not have as big of an appetite during this period. Her abdomen can be crowded with puppies.
  • You can feel the puppies move now.
  • Pups have fur and are more active in their crowded space. They move to get into position for birth.
  • See if you can get her used to her whelping box

*estimated due date is based on the first tie and can change depending on the exact date ovulation took place.

We are getting the puppy room sanitized and organized. We have restocked the whelping kit and making sure all towels and bedding are rewashed and ready to go. Winter is doing well. She is still active but does take more rests. She searches me out now more then “normal”. This weekend I will be busy prepping after whelp (delivery) meals for added nutrition and extra calories.

Winter, Pregnancy Week 7

Week 7: June 18 – June 24

  • She may shred papers, blankets or bedding in an attempt at “nest building” in the last weeks.
  • Your girl could tire more easily, and may become irritable.
  • Moderate exercise is the proper approach. Neither forced rest nor strenuous exercise is a good idea. Short periods of gentle play and short walks are good.
  • You may feel the puppies now but counting them may be a bit more difficult.
  • Definite abdominal enlargement.
  • Abdomen hair will start shedding.

*estimated due date is based on the first tie and can change depending on the exact date ovulation took place.

Winter is doing great. We have her whelping box (pool) all cleaned and set up. We are rearranging the puppy room and I have started painting the walls. If you have been following you know that red and black is gonna be a pain to cover up. I have also ordered supplies to restock our inventory. I will start stocking up and preparing extra food to have on hand for after the pups are born. Lots of fresh meats, bone broth, mothers pudding, yogurt, pumpkin, etc.

Winter’s Upcoming Litter

Winter is doing well. She is due next month. Her estimated due date is July 10th. Tyrion and Winter were kept together and had several ties over several days. Her due date (whelp date) can vary depending on when she was ovulating. My girls tend to go past their due dates so I am emphasizing ‘estimated” here.

You can view pregnancy progress below. I included last weeks info as well.

Week 5: June 4th – June 10th

  • You may be able to feel the little puppies -they would be the small bumps in the abdomen.
  • Development of toes, whisker buds, and claws.
  • Eyes now close and gender can be determined.
  • The puppies are now considered fully developed miniature dogs.
  • She may be showing… She may also gain a little weight particularly if she is going to birth more than 1-2 puppies..

Week 6: June 11th – June 17th

  • During the last several weeks, your dog’s nutritional needs nearly double.
  • Your girl could start to be less comfortable, and could vomit on occasion.
  • Feed small meals several times a day.
  • Increase water.
  • There may be some clear fluid discharge from the vulva. This is normal.
  • Enlargment of mammary glands as nipples darken and enlarge.

What’s Up

So we have lots going on. Just a brief run down.

Future Breeding: Amara will be getting altered (fixed) within the next few weeks. Our vet ask us to wait about a month after pups go home for her to fully recover. We will move forward with Winter, Reign and possibly Millie. As you know keeping Millie was not in the plans, so we will see how things look once she matures and fills out. We do plan on keeping a Reign/Stark baby. This has been the plan since their previous litter. My daughter will be getting Stark fixed after this breeding.

Training Certification: I am taking this summer to do some independent study. I still plan to pursue my Dog Training Certification this fall/winter. While my focus/specialization will remain on Early Puppy Socialization and Foundation Training I feel this certification will make me well rounded and I will have the ability to branch out if needed.

Puppy Classes: I am currently only offering virtual classes and virtual one on one. Private classes and group classes are on hold until early 2021.

Working the Dogs: We are working with Tyrion and Rayder on learning mushing terms and hope to have them on the scooter this fall. Texas is super hot and we are counting down for cooler weather and morning runs! We are still working with Millie and I am looking into CGC and possible trick certifications. 😀

Meetings, Live Steams, Puppy Cams & more

Meetings: As one of the first breeders (the only one I know who does) to implement puppy family only virtual meetings, I have decided to continue these and make them a permanent part of our program. In these meeting we discuses litter progress, problem solve common puppy behaviors, foundation training, socialization and more. You are essentially getting a lite version of my puppy training class! The goal is to help you as much as possible to keep you from becoming frustrated and to keep puppies in their homes!! *I am certified to teach this information!

Live Streams: Facebook Live steams are broadcast from our Private Supernova Siberians Group only! This group is for our puppy families and deposit holders only! You will see socialization, enrichment and our Puppy Culture Protocols in action! We just don’t “say” we “do”!! Remember Puppy Culture is selling point and many breeders “say” they do it but simply don’t or they imitate what they see others do without knowing the science behind it and often do it incorrectly!!

Puppy Portal: Our Puppy Portal is located on our website and is for current puppy families (buyers) only. It is password protected and contains info, photos and updates. We plan to improve this area and it may contain “Puppy Cams” in the future.

One on One: We also offer one on one virtual pre pick up meetings where we can go over paperwork and address any concerns you may have.

Saying goodbye to our Avengers {texas huskies}

Fury left this morning. The last Avenger has moved on to be the hero to his new family. It is always bittersweet. I worry about them, and there is always a brief moment when I choke up as the new family walks away with their puppy. But the truth is I feel a bit like Jon Snow… “My watch is done.” By the end of 8 weeks I am tired. I give them my all, and they are my main focus. Don’t get me wrong I love it and I do it willingly and with love! But by the end I am tired. The worry doesn’t end there, though. I always think back and wonder, did I do everything I could? Did I get the protocols done that I wanted? Did I get enough socialization and enrichment in to give them the best foundation? What can I do different next time? I am always on pins and needles waiting for the 72 hour vet check, to reassure that all is well.

At this last vet visit my veterinarian listened to me talk about concerns and said “You really worry about all that?”. I thought “doesn’t everyone?” I mean shouldn’t every breeder? I know my anxiety does not help… being a worry wart is a curse. haha If I worry to much it’s only because I don’t want to do this if I can’t do it with love and care. But as much as I spend 8+ weeks worrying, I am lucky because I also spend that time with unlimited puppy kisses, cuddles and unconditional love.

So to our darling Avengers, have a great adventure. Be good babies and have a fun and beautiful life! XOXO
