I did it! {Texas Husky Puppies}

Yesterday I successfully completed the Fundamentals of Dog Training and Behavior course. I can not wait to pursue my dog training certification. I hope to start that intensive (in depth) course Spring 2021!

Dog training is unregulated meaning anyone can call themselves a trainer and practice on your pets. Please research your trainer, their background and their methods before attending classes or more importantly, leaving your pet for any type of board and train!

What’s new? {Texas Huskies}

Hi guys. I hope you all are doing well. As the world seems to be getting crazier I find myself turning inward and I am so thankful for my little place in this world. My family and our pack have been my sanctuary. I am excited to share that I enrolled in a Fundamentals of Dog Training and Behavior course today. This is a course will jump start my knowledge and tide me over until I can hopefully take the complete dog training certification course next year. Being a certified Puppy Start Right Instructor I still plan to focus on puppy socialization and puppy foundation training but I feel having my dog training certification will broaden my knowledge and make me a more well rounded and credible trainer.

Dog training is unregulated meaning anyone can call themselves a trainer and take your money. Please research before hiring a trainer or attending a class. Not only do you run into frauds there are also many different training styles. For instance I am a positive reinforcement trainer and do not use adverse tools of any kind.

Reign is doing well and if her moodiness is any indication we should be having puppies next month. I hope to have my course completed before pups are born. As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Our babies are getting big. {Texas Huskies}

At 3.5 weeks old, our Animal Crossing Litter is changing every day. They are using the potty pads and are now transitioning to the potty box. They have started puppy mush and love it. Of course Mommy milk is still the meal of choice! They are now in their Socialization period and they are exploring novel stimuli (new things) everyday. We are very thankful that this litter all have wonderful homes waiting for them.

Puppy Socialization in Action {Texas Puppy Trainer}

Contrary to what many breeders and puppy owners think, kids and neighbors playing pass the puppy is not early puppy socialization.

As a Certified Puppy Start Right Instructor I understand the importance of early puppy socialization and how crucial it is for creating a strong foundation.

As a breeder and instructor I try to educate our new families on the importance of exposing young puppies to as many new experiences as possible. We have Zoom meetings to discuss their puppies progress as well as observe socialization and Puppy Culture protocol sessions. We also discuss common puppy behaviors, and the importance of continuing training in a puppy socialization class followed by a training foundations class .

Winter’s Expected Litter. {Texas Husky Breeder}

We have several confirmed ties (over several days) between Winter and Tyrion. Expected due date is mid July. Due dates are estimated and can vary depending on ovulation.

We have a really strong waiting list in place and we are now ready to take deposits. Winter typically has 6-7 puppies, so I feel comfortable taking 4 deposits prebirth. Remaining deposits will be taken after pups are born and deposit holders have chosen. Deposits are NON refundable (they are transferable up to 12 months). Please make sure you are stable and ready to commit to the purchase before placing a deposit.

I can not guarantee what gender, eye color or coat color will be available. If you place a prebirth deposit you must be open to the puppies that are born. I can’t control genetics. In the past we have had blue, parti and bi eyed puppies. Brown is always a possibility. We are NOT blue eyed husky breeders. We love the breed not the eyes. All eye colors love you the same! In the past coat colors included, Black and White, Black, Tan and White, and Red and White. Dirty faces and traditional masks as well as standard coats and semi woolly coats are also possible.

Please feel out a puppy application if you are interested in this litter.

Our next litter will be between Reign x Stark. Breeding expected to be in July (pups in Sept) but it all depends on when Reign cycles next.

What’s the big deal?

*EDIT: this post has been copied and used WITHOUT my permission. This post is written by me (Malissa Speaker) and is not to be copied, shared without my consent. It is defiantly not to be used on a website and used as if it is someone else’s personal experience!

I get several people asking what the big deal is about Puppy Culture and Puppy Start Right. The answer is simply it’s probably not a big deal to most people. Plenty of amazing puppies are bred and raised by breeders who do not use either program. What I can do is tell you why it’s a big deal to me.

Puppy Culture was my intro into puppy development and the importance of the Socialization Period. Contrary to belief Socialization is not just puppies meeting kids and babies. Puppy Culture focuses on the first 12 weeks of development. As a breeder I have them in my care during a majority of that time. Puppy Culture creates a solid foundation. It sets the stage for any and all training that comes after. Puppy Culture gives detailed instructions for breeders, trainers and owners on how to provide Puppy Culture protocols at specific developmental stages within the Socialization period. These include:

  • Habituation and Conditioning
  • Developmentally Appropriate Socialization and Enrichment Activities
  • Take a Treat and Adding the Clicker
  • Problem Solving Challenges
  • Clicker Training Games
  • Manding
  • Potty Training and Crate Conditioning
  • Resource Guarding and Exchanges
  • Attention, Leash Walking and Body Handling
  • Introducing Sit, Down, Recall, Heel Position, Crate Release, and more

I have personally chosen to invest in this program and several of it’s companion videos and books to broaden my knowledge and assist me with my breeding program.

You can read more about why I love Puppy Culture here!

Puppy Start Right is a course I took to not only expand my knowledge but to be able to offer puppy classes to my puppy families and to people in my community. This course again focuses on the critical Socialization Period (8 weeks-12/16 weeks) but also includes materiel on how to teach the importance of socialization and puppy training to puppy parents. Here is a quote from my website SitnStayPawsitive.com “The first 12 weeks are critical for socialization and learning. Much of what people think of as problem behaviors in adult dogs often comes down to not providing proper early socialization. The best time to provide this is during a puppy’s socialization period, typically under 12 weeks old. What your puppy learns during this important developmental stage will likely shape his behavior for the rest of his life. Proper early socialization creates the foundation for having a confident, friendly, well-adjusted companion.”

This is a certification program where my knowledge and understanding of the material was tested. Some of the material includes:

  • Development and Behavior
    • Developmental Periods
    • Domestication vs Taming
    • Social Behavior of Dogs
    • Sensory Perceptions
    • Body Language
  • How Dogs Learn
    • Learning Theory
    • Innate Behavior and Learning
  • Positive Socialization
  • Intro to Positive Training
    • Training Basics
    • Clicker Basics
    • Foundation Exercises (attention, sit, down, target, place, recall, bring it, leave it,etc)
  • Problem Prevention and Solving (potty training, chewing, jumping, etc)
  • Diseases and Vaccinations

EDIT: Since this post was written I have gone on to take a Puppy Socialization course from Avidog as well as Fundamentals of Dog Training and Behavior from VSA. Investing in my education and broadening my understanding of puppy development assists me in raising puppies. It has become so important to me that it has motivated me to pursue my professional dog trainer certification Fall 2021.
